In 2004, Australia had seven major export markets for its meat. These export market were Russia, US, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan. The meat involved in these markets included ostrich meat, Emu meat, Kangaroo meat, rabbit meat and crocodile meat. During their research, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) used Thailand as their target market to introduce rabbit meat wasn’t known in their target market.
The launching was done on Saturday 15th October 2005 in Bangkok in a British club. A group of experts were there too to investigate and review the quality of rabbit. A Scotland chef was chosen as a neutral chef during this ceremonial launching event. A lot of professionals in this field from diverse originality were present and had been invited for lunch. Some meat (10 Kilograms) of this rabbit meat was exported to Thailand for launching.
Rabbit meat was not popular in Thailand making the market monotonous for this Australian product. The target market gave an impression to like the product and three quarters of the investigated people preferred to have the product in their menu. They had chosen about 14 people during this event. The chefs came from Italian, French and other famous International restaurants.
Bryan Balmer who was the organizer of the event spoke about the history of rabbits in Australia and the chefs explained how rabbit meals are prepared. This was before the chefs presented three rabbit dishes: Loin rabbit and wild mushrooms, Rabbit pisotto and porcini mushrooms and rabbit pie with curly endive and roasted pumpkins. The individuals on investigation seemed not to be familiar with this meat. They seemed to like the product though it was unfamiliar to most of them. Having collected information from these diverse people of Thailand, the Australian researchers were sure that this group of 14 people represented millions of the Thailand people and they would welcome the new product to their menus. The rabbit again has high market demand and opportunities that introducing it in Thailand would have been the best opportunity for the Australian market. The demand of this white meat is high almost the entire part of the year since it only goes down only in summer.
In Australia, the rabbit market gets its license for exportation under Farmed Rabbit Industries of Australia Ltd. Beef , goat and lamb exportation are under
Kangaroo meat is also an export for Australia. It is not that popular and has little market, only in China. Crocodile is a wild animal that lives in water. Crocodile meat is generally white meat which tastes like chicken, rabbit or frog legs. It is similarly delicious and is prepared the same way as these dishes. Crocodile meat is highly nutritious having high content of protein and less cholesterol. Fats are contained only in the tail of this retile. Being wild meat, it has less contaminations and therefore highly natural. Locally, Zimbabwe has been doing this product for years but the Africans do not take it up well and this country has been blinded by international markets, forgetting the local market. The demand for the meat in Asia and Europe pushed her into introducing local market. This market has been declining lately.
Padenga holdings which the country’s crocodile farming group, is facing financial problems in this market due to high cost of maintenance of crocodiles. Crocodiles are carnivorous and only feed on meat. The Zimbabwean government is however trying to research on non- meat food for crocodiles to reduce the cost. The Africans are trying to take up this product to promote their country locally since the Asian and European markets are going down. The crocodile business in this country has brought corporation between the government and a private sector.
This farming group is the highest crocodile products producer Africa. They utilized the Nile crocodiles which were exploited sometimes back. High demand of skin products locally and internationally have been doing fine until the two popular markets started collapsing.
