Company background
The first ever Starbucks was found and started in Seattle in 1971 by three partners Jerry, Zev and Gordon. These partners met while back in the University and all were studying different courses. Jerry was an English teacher, Zev a history teacher and Gordon was a writer. The three decided to open a coffee store where they would sell coffee beans and the equipment that made coffee. They became very famous even without selling the drinks. After a decade, the trio hired Howard Schultz as the Director of the Retail Operations. He was an open minded guy who advised the owners that they should incorporate selling drinks too which they did not agree. Howard convinced with his Idea had to start his own Chan of coffee bars named II Giornale. Schultz was in the right direction and his business flourished so well. Later Starbucks was sold to him.
Problem
During one of the board meetings, the board members found out that the company was loosing money consistently. Schultz told them that losses were unavoidable during the first times of expansion. He told the board members that the company would continue loosing money until they acquired a proficient management team that was beyond the company’s expansion needs (Schultz & Dori 220). They also had to get a sophisticated computer system that could keep a good track of the sales in all the stores. He told them that patience was a must as the company was investing in an efficient system that would drive the company into the 90s.

Starbucks has its own strengths and weaknesses as a company. The coming in of Schultz was one of the best things that ever happened to Starbucks. He was a determined entrepreneur who was well aware of the market trends and how to drive a company into total success. The first thing he did was to establish a very proficient and experienced management team. He employed managers that were highly qualified and who worked tirelessly to ensure that the objectives of the companies were met. He also introduced a program of retraining all the store employees in an aim of reigniting their attachment to their customers. This training was also aimed at reinforcing the attention of the employees on delivering high quality customer services to their customers. To ensure that this was done, he ordered that all the stores worldwide be closed down for three hours so as to allow the employees undergo this training. This was a very smart and important move that propelled the company in delivering high quality standards and in return attracting more clients. The expansion of these stores worldwide also increased the company’s market share and made it much more popular generating much more revenue. The company is estimated to be employing over 150000 employees worldwide. Strength is that the company always shares the best practices across all its stores (Burks 67). The menu offerings are always refreshed constantly too. Additional resources such as laptops and other internet software for scheduling work also improve the efficiency of the employees and services offered.
