A Life experienced Challenge and its solution
Public service professionals face great challenges while in and out of the workplace. A strong and resilient character is required to overcome these challenges. The challenges experienced by public professionals can range from job pressure to ill relationship with co-workers or the members of the public. This essay will discuss the challenges I encountered when I was working as an explore lab intern team leader in Michigan Department of Health and Human services between August 2014 and October 2015 and also in my current position as the executive assistance to the CEO, Michigan health council. The essay will also explore the methods I used to overcome these challenges.
As an intern team leader, my duties included creating hands-on experiments and presenting them to grade school students as a way of encouraging them to take Sciences and public health as majors or careers in urban and underserved communities. I also developed innovative marketing strategies to increase network with district schools and enhance the relationship with strategic partners. The other role I played in the department was to increase correspondence with partner organizations; reviewing resumes, conducting interviews and surveying partners to obtain feedback. I also hosted a career fairs to hire marketing and partnership development interns.
The greatest challenge I encountered as an intern team leader was how to allocate duties to other interns who were working under me. Some interns were very good in developing marketing strategies whereas others were excellent in lab duties. I thought I could be allocating duties according to how good a given intern was in a particular field. This met a lot of resistance from some interns, who argued that laboratory work was hard and tedious compared to designing of marketing strategies. They demanded that I should come up with a fair way of duty allocation and if not so, they were not ready to work under my supervision. This commotion created tension between interns who were working in the laboratory and those who were working in the marketing field. I tried to consult my seniors, but they told me that it was my duty as a leader to develop strategies for solving crises in my area of jurisdiction.
To overcome these challenges, I called for a meeting for all interns who were working under my supervision. In the meeting, I first gave them a checklist to indicate the area each would like to be working. The checklist indicated that majority preferred working in the marketing field over the laboratory. We decided that allocation of duties in the laboratory and the marketing were to be alternating on a two-week basis and came up with a duty Rota showing when an intern was supposed to be working in the laboratory and the marketing field. Since then, working relationship between interns improved and I also felt relieved from the pressure was getting from this challenge. As a leader, I learned that it is of great importance to include juniors in decision making.
In my current position as the Executive Assistant to the CEO, Michigan health council, I encountered the challenge of developing a cost-effective program that would provide valuable services and promote social prosperity among the children in Michigan. The Health Council is a non-profit making organization with a mission to develop a premier health care workforce in Michigan. Assisting, bolstering and providing recommendations for the numerous programs within the Council opened my eyes to the obstacles faced by health organizations and also helped me with a better understanding of the needs and requirements of this sector. In spite of being the youngest and less experienced member in the organization, my fresh perspective, ability to disregard preconceived notions, and willingness to ask questions helped me in becoming a leader.
