University System Is Getting Destroyed
On hiring faculty off the tenure track
Business owners and legislatures in the universities want to keep costs down in order to have control over the employees. Hiring of new staff has gone way up in the university and likewise outside the university. This divides people into two groups, plutonomy and precariat. The people who belong to the plutonium group, are usually the ones who advise the rich people in the society, mainly their work is to advice the rich on where to invest their money so that it may grow.
Some of them are now brokers of major companies and they make good money for selling shares in banks and other companies. The precariat is the middle man and they usually don’t have appropriate wages their employers always have their careers at their hands and can easily destroy them. Once a great business man, Allan Greenspan, gave a speech to the congress about having a great economic success and he called his idea “GREATER WORKER INSECURITY”. Transferring this to the university meant that the employees could not ask for more money, they could not strike and they were to take tiny salaries.
The main goal for this was to show the employees that they could easily lose their jobs. But to ensure that you have a healthy business you have to make the employees insecure. In this employer and employee relationship, there is minimal contact or trust. The basis of this system is to maximize on the labor force and minimize on the companies spending. However, when such a system is incorporated into the University, it becomes a different deal. The incorporation becomes of the system does not suit it and the delegation of is wrong.
Weaknesses
This system of hiring many laborers at a lesser cost should not be incorporated in the University system. This is because the quality of education usually goes down with it. The cheaper it is to hire the faculty members the worse the quality of education provided. Allan Greenspan was only thinking of his “greater worker insecurity” from a corporation stand point. This system is not accurately workable in the education system.
Employee insecurity is not a good system of getting the best out of every worker. This system is like a form of slavery to the faculty members. Here the members are not able to express themselves in anyway. Strikes and communication with management over benefits is a basic necessity to the workers motivation to work. Employees have a greater chance to leave their jobs as they opt for positions elsewhere.
This system of hiring faculty does not allow for the signing of contracts. Major employment benefits by both employer and employee are not included. This allows one to do as they please. The employer may wake up in a bad mood and choose to fire a few of the workers. The same is true about the employee. They could wake up one day and leave the University. This behavior in education makes everyone involved to be at an edge; you never know when you are going to fall.
Employees in such a system will tend to overdo their abilities in order to please the management parties. This in the universities could be like helping students in cheating. When the students cheat, grades go higher and the evaluation of the faculty member rises consequently. This may be a long term side effect that will hurt the University on a long term basis.
Strengths
However, at times the hard work of the employees could pay off. There are a select few who would prefer making changes in their style of lecturing the students. This will ensure that they effectively study in their areas of study. This will effectively increase the quality of education in the education. The use of a “greater worker insecurity” system in the University allows for a platform for future professors. The insecure workers are able to work themselves in order to prove their worth.
