College Education Should be Free
Education is considered the backbone of any given society and a basic human right, as reflected in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration. The Article states that "Education shall be directed to fully developing human personality and strengthening respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms" (Chirwa 10). The concept of making college education free as a springboard for bolstering the economy has been met with mixed reactions. Various states in America are working towards this noble idea. An example is California, which strives to make college education free via its California Promise Grant Program. Even though the state does not yet cover all educational costs, tuition fees are waived for students from low-income backgrounds. The state also has other sources like the Pell grants and Cal grants that have enabled 60% of students in Californian universities to attend tertiary institutions without paying fees (Cervantes 7). Despite lamentations that funding such educational needs is expensive and requires a lot of input, the programs are vital in enabling students who have failed to proceed or access college education due to a lack of funds.
The most adversely affected are students from minority groups whose parents still struggle to acquire basic needs and
