Do we need to teach sex education in schools?
It is a common misconception that certain topics do not need to be taught to children since they end up learning about them as they grow old. In today’s society, most teenagers learn about sex from their peers or from various internet sources (Rahman). The information from such sources may be misleading since it is usually not presented in a practical or ethical manner. Sex education is a continuous process and should be taught in schools which are credible sources for such information. The paper will provide a detailed discussion supporting the need for sex education in schools.
Comprehensive sex education goes beyond teachings on safe sex and abstinence. Numerous studies have consistently shown that teachings on abstinence have done little to discourage unsafe sexual behaviors among teenagers (Rahman). Instead, such teachings only deny young adolescents the opportunity to learn more about sex and encourages them to rely on less credible sources of information such as the internet or gossip from their peers. Comprehensive sex education teaches children about the functions of the reproductive parts, menstruation, safe sex and puberty (Rahman). Additionally, sex education
