The African American spiritual song was categorized as a religious folksong related to the enslavement of African people based in the American South. The songs played a major role in the abolishment of the slave trade. The spiritual songs were sung in different manners, with the most common one being calling and response form. An example of such an African American spiritual song is "Jesus leads me all the way," which was sung by Reverend Goodwin and the Zion Methodist Church congregation (Yurchenco et al,.). It was later recorded in 1970 by Henrietta Yurchenco.
The song is based on the message that the Christians believe that Jesus will lead their way. They trust that they have their savior who will deliver them from all their sorrows. The song was sung in unison, with the leader coming up with the first line and the congregation joining in unison. It played an essential role in contributing to the African American spiritual legacy. Since it was during slave time, the song was sung by slaves, and its spiritual nature portrayed their expression of their new faith, sorrows, and hopes.
