Ernest Hemingway is one of the most revered writers. According to most writers, he re-invented American literature. Like most writers, Hemingway also wrote several short stories. One of his most beloved short stories is Hills Like White Elephants. In this story, an unmarried couple sits at a railway station waiting for a train to Madrid. In this paper, the author examines the story and explains how Hemingway uses language to disguise the story's topic and the characters' intentions.
Before getting to the core, Hemingway introduces us to the two characters. They are both domineering and opinionated. The first to part from the pleasantries is the man. Suddenly he says, “It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig,…..” (Hemingway 230). The statement comes on suddenly it disrupts the flow of conversation between the two. The way the man introduces the topic into their conversation shows his urgency.
Despite their arguing, the girl is having a good time. But the man does not realize this because he wants to discuss the abortion. Although the man tries to show support by indicating that it is the girl’s decision, he does not relent. He continues talking about how it is a simple operation.
