Are animals entitled to have rights? Medical attention? Right to home? Food and water? Love? These are some of the aspects that have resulted in a heated debate regarding animal rights as well as the implication rights. It is arguably true that animals do not have right since they lack moral agents and they cannot reason or differentiate the right or wrong like human beings. Does the fact that animals lack moral reasoning does not mean people should treat them badly? Michael Pollan, in his article, "Animal’s Place" outlines various facts that advocate for animals’ equal treatment and moral rights.
I tend to agree with Pollan that animals should be treated with the same measure as human beings. Human being are more the same as animals. Human being and animals are found in the same kingdom. Biologically, animals nervous system, the skeletal and immunological system is structured more the same as that of a human being. I agree with Michael Patton that the morality of meat production ought to be questioned because animals are also capable of experiencing pain as human do. I wish that most of us would witness exactly what happens behind the scenes in most slaughterhouses. A vast majority of us would not be able to stomach what they see let alone consume meat the way they do CITATION Pol02 \l 1033 (Pollan). It is the high time that meat industry shifts from its profit-driven approach to a more humane approach. The humane approach in the meat industry demands the understanding that animals experiences pain and tries to minimize the pain that animals have to undergo before their become food. It is so inhumane that most people enjoy causing unbearable pain to animals because they are profit driven motives. The idea of eating animals meet is a little less okay with me since every time we have to eat meat an animal has to die. Vegetarianism is more beneficial to humankind than meat consumption despite the fact that opponents have voiced their skepticism opposing the idea adopting vegetarianism CITATION Lau10 \l 1033 (Laura).
It is arguably true that lives of most animals are not pleasant, but this does not give people a reason to make lives of animals more awful. Common practices such as cutting off pigs’ tails as well as cutting chicken’s beaks are uncalled for. Most people argue that such action are necessary because they protect chicken from being cannibalized by the casemates or to enable pigs to defend themselves in scenarios where other pigs try to chew they tails. However, we fail to understand what drives these animals to behavior in such a manner. Hens, for instance, in most cases, are caged in overcrowded rooms leading them to portray bizarre behavior, such as eating other chickens or rubbing against the wall till they bleed out or become featherless. The case scenario would be entirely different if the chicken who allowed to live freely, the chickens would not have they peaks beaks snipped leave alone dying from bleeding. The main reason most pigs chew other pigs is because these pigs are weaned only ten days after there are born as opposed to twelve weeks after they are born. Is ripping off pigs the best solution to prevent pigs from chewing other pigs? No. Why not just let the pigs be weaned naturally as well as providing space for them to move around freely. I am also against the torture of animal such as those carried out in Rodeos It is inhumane for big men in black to torture continuously innocent beasts in search for manhood as huge crowds cheers and jeer at these violent activities.
