The concept of Violence in the Post-Apartheid South-Africa
Violence was the most common language for South- Africans during the apartheid period. The Africans rebelled against policies of the apartheid system using violence and the rulers ensured adherence to the rules of segregation using violence. When the post-apartheid system was ushered in, none among them knew how to live with each other except by violence to achieve a goal. It is in this context that ‘Disgrace’ by J. M. Coetzee was written. This paper, therefore, seeks to explicate the levels of violence during and after the apartheid with close reference to Coetzee’s Disgrace and further exemplify the need for reconciliation as the possible remedy for violence.
The first level of violence, as depicted in the text, is sexual violence against Black women. The writer presents Lurie, a university professor at the department of communication, who knows how to keep his sexual desires in check. The professor has been married twice but is now divorced and he is supposed to exhibit self-respect.
