In the poem Ballad of the Landlord, the main speaker is unnamed, but one can tell this persona is a black tenant. He is trying to get the attention of his white landlord to repair his roof and his broken steps. The poem illustrates "my roof has sprung a leak"… "These steps are broken down" (Hughes, lines 2 and 6). Other speakers in this poem include the landlord and the judge.
