Benefits of College Education (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

This task was an essay on whether college education was beneficial and thus took a debate approach. Factors against the benefit of college education included student loan repayment burdens that caused delays in saving for retirement, starting a family, or even buying a home. In addition, most students owed thousands in tuition fees long after graduation. Thus, college loans delayed other advancements in life also because college takes approximately four years to complete, within which other peers have long established their lives. Furthermore, starting as an apprentice in a trade job could make one successful as one can also start own shop eventually, thus why college education is deemed unnecessary. The benefits of college education weighed more as, despite the student loans, the present competitive job market gave college students high job prospects as specialization increased employability. Furthermore, college graduates earned more than their counterparts and were preferred for promotion, thus incremental salary over time.
Furthermore, as college graduates got better or managerial positions, the positions came with benefits like company-provided insurance coverage for self and sometimes family, thus fulfilling lives with better access to healthcare, which is expensive to most. Despite the argument that non-college graduates start life earlier than their counterparts, the improved job prospects and substantial earnings make them potential homeowners, thus increasing stability as college graduates. College graduates are also more exposed to healthy habits due to influences from fellow learned people in the workplace like investment options, exercising, healthy eating, meditation, vacation, and relaxation that positively impact one longevity. Lastly, college graduates positively contribute to the society they live in via community engagement, innovation, and research. New technologies improve the lives of the community members, like breakthroughs in disease treatments or technologies that increase crop yields. Thus, a college education is more beneficial than a lack of it.

Should Everyone go to College?
College education has been said to be the highway to a better life in the present time. Higher education in the resume has become a requirement for a job interview as more employers look for employees with specialized skills. The relationship between job opportunities and income level has been linked to education level. With the present preference of graduate employees, it has become apparent that to compete in the job market, a degree is needed. Further, the advantages that come with the potential high earning that come with college degree jobs are numerous and they further add the quality of life. Hence the importance of this essay is to highlight the importance of a college education and to propose why everyone should go to college.
Although the argument against why people should go to college raise valid points the advantages college education brings in the present times weigh heavier. One of the points raised is that several college graduates still owe thousands in tuition fees long after graduation (Tretina). The student loans repayment burdens cause delays in saving for retirement, starting a family, buying a house, or even getting married while they pay off their debts. While it is true that tuition is costly and that the loans are burdensome, a college degree will give the student a better starting pay from which they can manage their debts and build a life. Further college degrees increased the prospect of employment and job security hence with the potential of substantial earning they can pay off their debts and continue enjoying the benefits of the degree. Additionally, a high pay means being better able to cater to the family’s needs hence better life.
Another argument is that people who opt for trade jobs do not require a college degree and some end up being successful (Tretina). While apprenticeship in trade jobs can be a way of making a living, getting competitive pay can be challenging unless one venture into entrepreneurship with no guarantee for success. College education not only gives job skills but also incorporates other soft and supporting skills that are needed for success. Hence college education could be more preferred for success as an entrepreneur and competitiveness in the job market especially because some of the trade jobs are being replaced by those with some college education. To remain competitive some college education is thus needed.
College education takes approximately four years to complete and sometimes longer and other times people would drop out when they can no longer meet the college demands. Hence the argument that within that time some people have established their lives (Tretina). While that may be true college education offers stability in the job market. Due to the high unemployment rates among high school diploma holders and below, the safer choice could be college education for job security, hey pay potential, and hence a better and predictable successful life.
College education thus becomes very important, especially in the present competitive job market. Studies have shown that employees with a college degree have higher prospects for job opportunities as specialization in the job increases their employability (Nuckols, Bullington, and Gregory). College graduates earn more income than those without a college degree that is according to various surveys. The prospects of high disposable incomes mean financial stability and a better life. A survey done by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) on unemployment rates and earning by education attainment showed the importance of college education. The survey covered post-graduate students, graduate-level, associate, and community college, and lastly the high school diploma and below. The rates of Unemployment decreased as the level of education increased and the weekly earnings increased with the increase in the level of education. Unemployment rates among high school diploma was twice the percentage in degree holders, hence showing a causal relationship between college education, income and employment prospects. A college degree therefore significantly bolsters ones earning potential and the prospects of employment in the present times with the potential of enjoying premium substantial earnings that increase with the increase in education level.
Since the majority of jobs require a college degree, many job opportunities hence become available for the graduates. While in the past people were hired as apprentices and rose through the ranks, the present job environment requires already schooled employees who are then molded into the position. Hence without a college education, it may be hard to find a job opportunity and the competition for any opportunities available will be fierce and very few. Further college education brings greater job satisfaction. Prior knowledge like learning the principles of the job, the mechanics, and the workings of the job give one a better understanding of job expectations. Theory and practical learned in colleges in addition to different approaches one can employ in various situations add to confidence in performing tasks. Additional college graduates have the better interpersonal skill and can work more autonomously hence preferred choice by many employers
Apart from the benefit of increased employment opportunities and income potential leading to a steady paycheck and a secure job, college education also brings with it a greater life expectancy. Bachelor degree holders and upwards are more likely to have health insurance provided for by their employers hence offsetting their healthcare costs. As they rise through the ranks the greater the coverage that could extend to family members. Hence the importance of a college degree in health and safety which are prerequisites in living a fulfilling life thus why people need to go to college.
College-educated people are also more likely to be homeowners (APLU). Due to the improved prospects of employment and the potential of substantial earnings, owning a home is a possibility leading to a more stable life. Education attainment also means exposure to healthy habits due to influences from fellow learned people in the workplace. Increased income leading to health insurance, homeownership, or moving to a better neighborhood can positively influence a person’s life choices. This could include a change in eating habits, incorporating exercises like scheduled golfing or tennis games with peers, vacations, or meditation that can positively influence one longevity. Additionally, the nature of researching inculcated in college education helps in further improving life choices through books and finding more information on various subjects about better life choices like budgeting, investments hence improving their overall life.
A college degree also positively impacts society and the world due to the various contribution via community engagement, innovation, and research (APLU). Highly skilled graduates who invest and contribute to their societies through cutting-edge research bring about change in almost every inconceivable field and industry. Further college-educated persons can introduce new workable processes in their communities through the dissemination of new knowledge like for example new farming technologies for better yields. Therefore college education is important in driving progress in our communities and the world at large.
College graduates are also considerably less reliant on government subsidies and programs as opposed to high school diploma holders due to higher incomes and health insurance (APLU). Due to their higher earnings college graduate employees cover a disproportionate share in tax revenues that helps in funding government initiatives. Hence college education is important in tax revenue to fund government initiatives and allows one to be more self-reliant.
