As depicted in ‘Cathedral’ by Raymond Carver, the author resonates around a theme of connection, detachment, insecurity, jealousy, and isolation. The author of this story introduces an unnamed narrator to his audience, allegedly his wife and a blind guest called Robert. The narrator as revealed in the story wallows in the annals of jealousy as he finds the blind man, Robert the source of all his insecurities. The narrator feel insecure about the blind man’s visit. His wife knew the blind man way back before him and they have got along quite well. They were so close and even traded tapes together. Narrator’s wife had even told him how she wrote a poem about the blind man. Based on the fact that they had known each other for long time and were really close makes narrator insecure, because after ten years he only decided to visit after his wife’s death. Maybe he thought it was the best time to rekindle their old relationship being that he is now a widower. Narrator must feel jealous based on the fact that his wife had been married before and led a military life, he is pessimistic she may divorce him just like she divorced the military husband.
