How Young is Too Young for an iPhone?
Technological improvements are being made every day. As a result, many people including children own iPhones. These gadgets are used for both personal and business purposes. “According to an article in the New York Times, a recent survey found that 38 percent of children under two have used smart devices such as iPhones, iPads and Kindles.” (Corcoran). The data raises a significant question of whether kids should be allowed to own mobile devices at a more tender age. Even though the subject is highly controversial, iPhones and smartphones have proven to be essential, especially to school-age children.
Modern technology is erroneously viewed from a negative perspective. For instance, there are unfounded claims that early exposure to technological devices impairs brain development in small children. Despite such assumptions, iPhones and smartphones are custodians of information which benefits kids. An iPhone, for example, consists of various applications which enhance academic skills and language development. In a world of technology, a schoolchild is capable of learning new information from anywhere by just surfing the internet. As stated by Valk, et al., “Mobiles can support the great amount of learning that occurs during the many activities of everyday life, learning that occurs spontaneously in impromptu settings outside of the classroom and outside of the usual environment of home and office.” (120).
Additionally, technology has almost become part of humans’ everyday life. As such, mobile phones are a great way to familiarize children with the new technology. “Knowing how to use technology from a young age gives children a solid platform from which to grow their technological experiences and proficiency.” (“Technology and Children”). Besides, the future of humankind regarding technology depends on this young generation. Their access to various apps (e.g., drawing apps) hones their creativity. “Though nothing can replace the tactile feedback provided by building blocks or drawing with crayons, the fact is that there are many ways for kids to express themselves, and technology can provide a great outlet for your little one’s curiosity.” (“Technology and Children”).
