Response to A Korean War Captive in Japan
Kang Hang's main point of writing A Korean War Captive in Japan was to record his experiences after being captured by the Japanese soldiers. However, the novel offers much more in terms of cultural perceptions as well as personal transformation. For example, Hang's account provides commentary about Japanese culture from an outsider perspective. His narrative informs the Korean Monarchy about Japan and its culture. Furthermore, the story also highlights the transformation of Hang, from a person who hates the Japanese to an individual who respects them but also seeks to honor his country.
