American Family
Families have experienced changes in the last 50 years and have restructured the family norms and practices. In the 1960s, the father was the primary breadwinner in most families, and the family's success depended on his hard work or level of income. During this period, more than 70% of the families in the United States were living with two married parents, and most children reached their adulthood while their parents were still married. Therefore, the dominant family form during the 1970s was characterized by having two married parents and their children. However, from the 1970s, the percentage of families with two parents started to drop, and more families had single parents. Today less than 40% of American families have one parent or cohabitating parents who are not married (Dominguez-Martinez 205). The role of women has changed, making more women to be breadwinners for their families and are not housewives anymore as they used to be in the 1970s.
