Cloning is the ability to generate distinct beings with identical or nearly identical DNA, either spontaneously or artificially, employing genetic engineering techniques. Some creatures in the natural world use asexual reproduction to create clones. In the biotechnology field, cloning is the process of creating creatures that have been cloned. Cloning often entails generating an exact clone of all or a portion of an organism's DNA. In contrast, genetic modification adds changes to existing DNA to generate a new, modified form of the genome. Cloning and genetic alteration are not the same things. There are significant differences between genetic engineering and cloning. Unlike cloning, which creates genetically identical duplicates of an organism, genetic engineering is manipulating genes to construct purposely altered organisms—and in some cases, totally new life forms.
