The Lottery
Mr. Summers is a mysterious leader of the community in a short story by Shirley Jackson. As a matter of fact, there are not any characters in the story that have enough exposition, the background of the community and their ritual is unknown. The background and the past of the characters is also unknown; however, Mr. Summers reveals his nature in more details than any other character, as he is present throughout the story. Shirley Jackson does not only implement an obvious plot of the annual lethal lottery in the story, but the author also incorporates several themes that are related to the life inside a community of people, especially, in a closed and small community like the fictional one in the story.
First of all, Mr. Summers is introduced while he prepares for the annual lottery and he makes the pieces of paper with the marks on them for the lottery. As a matter of fact, it is a serious position as the entire community trusts Mr. Summers. Indeed, it is hard to underestimate his role in the lottery, Mr. Summers might cheat or do something in order to influence the process; however, he does not. At least, it is not shown in the story. In other words, the person who actually makes a tool for execution is a powerful one and he is the leader of the community or one of the leaders.
Secondly, he has a lot of power over the people in the community. In fact, not only everyone believes in him but also obeys the decision of Mr. Summers. Even though everyone might be the victim of the lottery but still Mr. Summers forces people to participate in the lottery and there is not a single person who hesitates or reconsiders the role of Mr. Summers in this community. The only person who starts to worry about the lottery is Tessie; however, she is the victim of the lottery and that is the only reason why she starts to doubt in it and in the community.
