Captain Beatty from Fahrenheit 451
Captain Beatty is a complex character full of contradictions. He is the shrewd, ruthless primary antagonistic of the story; he is linked repeatedly to fire ,which ultimately leads to his death and to the fate as represented by recurrent card games. In Ray Bradbury's novel “Fahrenheit 451”, he’s the head honcho fireman (book burner) in a society where books are illegal. He is smart, well-read, and majorly prides himself on the work he does for the government as a censor. He has committed to the memory of many passages of literature and uses them in most instances when he speaks. He is an educated leader devoted to the fight against knowledge, which depicts him as an intellectual in a uniform of the intellectual’s worst foe. Besides him knowing more about books than any of the characters, it is his responsibility to uphold the status quo and burn the books and destroy any house that holds them (Litcharts, 2017). He spends most of his time quoting from them due to his curiosity about books, which makes him more of a paradox.
