Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in the world. Everyone, including legal, religious, and social experts, has their standpoints about abortion. Considering that there are two sides to a particular story, there are two dominant opposing views surrounding abortion. Those views include the pro-life and pro-choice (John 48). On any hand that one chooses to support, it acts as a counter-point stating the opposite. Meaning that the disparities between the two standpoints are evident because an individual’s interpretation of a specific reason for abortion is precisely the reverse of the other (Swank and Breanne 277). However, in as much as the differences are more visible, the two also contain vast significant similarities. The pro-life view is against abortion, while the pro-choice view is for abortion or supports abortion.
Foremost, pro-life or the activists against abortion have countless reasons behind their beliefs, most of which incline to religious ideals. They argue that because human beings are born from conception, therefore, the death of the fetus or embryo is directly comparable to the actual murder of a full-grown human (John 49). On the other hand, activists against abortion believe that nobody has the power to take another one’s life, especially an infant who is dependent on someone for survival, except God for the Christians and Allah for the Muslims. On the contrary, pro-choice claim that it is the right of a woman to choose whether to reproduce or not. Giving women the freedom to do as she wishes with her body is opposing God’s command to multiply and fill the earth.
From an economic perspective, pro-life activists view having an abortion due to financial constraints as ridiculous because it does not mean that the infant will have to live a life full of depression or challenges. Pro-life activists also argue that the mother, no matter how many challenges face her, she ought to give birth to the child, as many welfare programs are aiming at supporting such families (John 48-66). However, pro-choice activists believe that when a family is facing financial struggles, then abortion is always a viable option for the family. They state that there is no need for bringing a child into a life full of inadequacy and full of suffering. Advocates for abortion believe that women are denied their constitutional rights when restricted from performing abortions (Swank and Breanne 280). Moreover, they state that the act is justifiable because during fertilization, the embryo is not yet a human but a potential human; hence, its death is not murder.
