Western and Eastern Part of world
The social superiority of a historical period describes about the social class that dominated the society under a particular era. The world has witnessed the existence of superiority in every period marked as significant in history. Whether it is the eastern part or the western part of the world, the preeminence of one class over the other has been the matter of discussion in the milestones of history. The comparison of the eastern and western literature developed during the 10th century can be the best instances of this phenomenon “social superiority”.
The comparison of the Japanese literature “The Pillow Book” with the European literature” The Song of Roland” can make it clear that in every part of the world, the phenomenon “Social Security” existed. The Japanese literature “The Pillow Book” has been composed in Japanese hiragana. This has been written by Sei Shonagon during early 10th century. At that time, she was working as a court lady to Empress Consort Teishi in Heian Japan. The authors were well admired in the Japanese court and they enjoyed good position for good literary work. This work contains short and witty sentences which show the likes and dislikes of the people of that era. One of the sentences from the book shows how witty her sentences were: “In spring it is the dawn that is most beautiful”. The social superiority in the Heian period was established by the aristocratic people. The people in that era preferred the literature written in native language of Japan. The social superiority was established by the noblemen. The aristocrats favoured the literature and the authors enjoyed a good status in the society.
In comparison to the eastern part of the world, the western part of the world witnessed the supremacy of the church. “The Song of Roland” describes the importance of church in the social strata. The Christian kings and their noblemen enjoyed great status in the society. In the 10th century Europe, the Catholic Church became more powerful and determined to hold a series of campaigns in the Holy land. The superiority of the church is felt in the story of “The song of Roland” where it is depicted that a martyr moves to heaven. The Church was in support of establishing its superiority through declaring campaigns against foreign invaders such as Moslems. The church declared crusades against the Moslem lands.
