Analysis of Sense and Sensibility and Pygmalion Play
Both Sense and Sensibility and the play Pygmalion portray the themes of rationality against sensibility, the power of nature and imagination, and the recapturing of youth. In Sense and Sensibility, Austen explores the conflict between the need for reason and order in society and the desire for emotion and feeling. The characters must learn to navigate these opposing forces to find happiness. For instance, when Marianne becomes ill after her heartbreak with Willoughby, her sister Elinor can nurse her back to health by using reason instead of emotions (Austen). She is willing to help her sister get through the traumatizing moments by giving her comfort which she needs the most. Elinor's use of reason allows her to take care of Marianne's distraught, while Marianne's over-emotional response causes her illness (Wen). This condition shows how emotion can sometimes stand in the way of success and happiness.
