Corruption undermines the ability of a government to deliver efficient and effective services to its citizens. A government is likely to lose massive amounts of capital annually due to corruption. Additionally, a corrupt government is likely to treat the public unfairly because of its ability and willingness to bribe its officials for favors. Corruption can involve various features such as nepotism, favoritism, extortion, fraud, abuse of power, bribery, and embezzlement (Gislason 56). In Utopia, Thomas More questions the possibility of having a perfect society that has no corruption.
