Deception is defined as the act of one individual causing another individual or people to believe that something false is true. Deception can occur in several different circumstances. First, it is possible for people to unintentionally deceive others into believing a lie. Furthermore, people can be mistakenly deceived by appearances. Finally, it is possible for individuals to engage in intentional acts of deception (Mahon). Deception can therefore occur in different circumstances and is not inherently a moral issue.
The act of deception can occur unintentionally depending on the circumstances. For example, someone might read a fake news story article on Facebook and believe it is true. They will then share the story with their friends while believing it is true. Their friends will then believe the fake story, therefore, they will have been unintentionally deceived by their friend. In the example, deception occurred among the friends based on the definition of deception but it was never intentional.
Appearances can also lead to people being deceived in certain circumstances. For example, optical illusions cause people to believe that static images are actually moving based on how they appear to the observer. Therefore the observer will falsely believe that images that do not move in reality are actually moving. The example demonstrates how based on appearance, an individual can be deceived into believing something that is not true.
Deception can also be intentional in a circumstance where an individual is intentionally making someone else believe in a false reality. For example, the former president of the United States, George Bush, and his administration intentionally misled the public about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
