Declaration of independence refers to a statement implemented by the Continental Congress meeting at Philadelphia on 4 July 1776. The statement recorded the thirteen American colonies that were at war with Great Britain declared themselves independent states. The colonies acquired new status as new sovereign states and ceased being part of the British Empire. This led to the creation of a new nation, The United States of America, which John Adams led. The declaration had a summary of the colonist’s reasons for seeking independence. The move to declare independence meant that the colonists could gain assistance from France. The assistance from France would help the colonies fight the Great Britain to gain ultimate independence. Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense supported the independence of the colonies. The colonies received the work extensively promoting awareness. The British government took measures to dismiss the declaration. The Great Britain termed the document as of no significance proposed by irate colonists. The declaration had the main purpose of recognition of the UnitedStates of America as a sovereign state by foreign governments. Various treaties and wars between the USA and Great Britain yielded results for the USA. In the end, Great Britain recognized the USA as a sovereign and independent nation. This article expounds on how the structure of the declaration of independence follows the structure Paine outlines in his work Common Sense.
Firstly, the King of Great Britain has refused to assent his laws. Pain in his work Common Sense, states that the colonists are no longer able to live under the disposition of the cruel British Court. The Great Britain denied colonists assent of laws. This is important for the peaceful living of citizens of the colonists. Declaration of independence goes in line with Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense in matters regarding the law. Failure of assenting laws oppresses the colonists’ citizens. Assent of the laws is entirely for the public good. When the public does not get their way, it leads to their oppression, they cannot live happily, and safely.The Great Britain forbids Governors of colonists to pass laws of immediate and pressing concern (The Declaration of Independence 1776). This could only pass through assent of the King of Great Britain. It was the only condition for the colonist Governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing concern. In his work, pain talks about miseries they have endured and the peaceful methods they have ineffectively used for redress. The colonists could use peaceful methods to achieve their rights but it all depended on the King of the Great Britain. His assent mattered most as it gave a pass for the Governors to implement concerns facing colonists. This grew worse as the immediate and pressing concerns also depended on the assent of the King.
Paine states that the colonists are no longer able to live peacefully and happily under the cruel disposition of the British Court. The British are exploiting and oppressing the colonists, because the colonists are not fully aware of their rights. This is also because the colonists are under the Great Britain. In the declaration of independence, the King of Great Britain dissolves Representative Houses repeatedly.
