Drug Abuse and its Impacts on the Health of an Individual
Drug abuse is the consistent use of an illegal drug or the misuse of a legal drug. Drug abuse can negatively affect an individual's physical and mental health (Schulte and Hser, np). Drug abuse can have a range of negative impacts on an individual's health. These can include physical, mental, and social health problems. Physical health consequences can be short-term or long-term. Short-term effects of drug abuse may include impaired judgment, anxiety, paranoia, and increased aggression (Schulte and Hser, np). Long-term effects of drug abuse may include addiction, brain damage, liver damage, and cardiovascular disease. Drug abuse can also increase the risk of developing chronic illnesses like hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS (Schulte and Hser).
