A Sexist or a Victim of Life Experiences? Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway has been criticized as a sexist who expressed his sexism ideas in his writing (Polar et al. 1). However, this paper argues that the environment within which one grows influences their later ideas and works. According, it is demonstrated herein that Hemingway was not never sexist but a victim of suppressed masculinity in childhood. Later, through his short stories, Hemingway sought to redeem the lost masculinity by imagining characters that promoted masculinity and looked down upon women.
Hemingway's masculinity was repressed while growing up. Hemingway's mother sometimes dressed him as a girl, was domineering and abusive to Hemingway's diabetic father (Assemi et al. 3). This made the writer develop hatred towards women even to her mother. Perhaps this explains the writer's thirsty to express masculinity in the Novel 'Hills Like White Elephants,' where Hemingway portrays the American man as all-knowing, self-assured, and even pushes the woman to do abortion (Hemingway 15). On the other hand, the woman is pictured as nameless, destitute, muddled, and indecisive.
