Flying Solo Analysis
Flying solo is a novel written by Ralph Fletcher, which is advisable for both young and adult readers. The setting is about a grade 6 class whose teacher, Fabiano, is occupied with attending the reassign the class activities to Madam Muchmore, who complains about headache and fails to take over the duties assigned. Since the students, led by their leader Rachel, know the program that Fabiano follows, they commit themselves to it until a disruption by the assembly bell when they perform the usual ritual by Fabiano. Due to disagreements amongst the pupils, flares reach a point where Rachel has to confess that the class had spent the whole day under no teacher's supervisor. Mister Peacock gets angry, but that is what draws the meaning of the novel "flying solo" as a description of being independent, responsible, tolerating, and determining the choices to make when individuals are on their own.
Supervision should not determine the individual's choices as independence should be the best leader in learning to be responsible, as depicted by the pupils' behavior for the whole day they had spent without the teacher. Still, following the required program, without violating the school rules, supervision can be seen as a guideline that should help an individual to the other activities through commemoration when it is given at first instance. Learning the approaches require commitment. When individuals get the required information, they know different ways of living together, including tolerating differences, making choices, and being responsible for any action they commit. As in our society, social norms are introduced to people, and no one reminds us of how to follow them. Any defiling of the ethical values means that individuals have made choices and should be responsible for their actions. Hence, Ralph's theme works well with the societal following of norms by individuals.
