Name Professor Institution Date of Submission Freedom of speech refers to the right possessed by all people to communicate what they consider and express any point of view. People can express their opinions willingly without being penalized or censored. Censorship is the act of restraining, blocking, and inspecting information and ideas that some might find objectionable. (Elkin-Koren et al. 857) The primary definition of censorship fully breaches the First Amendment. People should always have the right to Freedom of Speech. Therefore, this paper provides a persuasive essay about Freedom of Speech and censorship. Freedom of Speech is a vital section of a democratic government since the only way the truth can appear is when the open competition of opinions or ideas is allowed. (Helberger & Natali, 993-1012) Some people may find censorship offensive because it is not fair to prevent others from expressing their ideas, feelings, or opinions. After all, some individuals feel that is wrong or "offensive." The fact that people own a right to believe and say is the basis for democracy to work. Suppose people are not allowed to express their ideas or opinions. In that case, the country will be under a dictatorship system whereby only one viewpoint on how society and the country should function is given the rights. When people are allowed to express their opinions, they usually assist in improving society and the country where they live. Freedom of Speech provides one with responsibilities to contemplate what fits into various circumstances, thus making us a better society/country. This will also make people develop a sense of belonging and feel involved in the decision-making processes in their society/country. Censorship can, however, be supported since some people can misuse the right to Freedom of Speech by saying words, writings, speeches, or images that can cause serious harm. (Federman, Cary 126-147) Such ideas can lead to suicide, depression, and stunted social growth.
