Gun Possession in Schools (Essay Sample)

With the increasing number of on-campus shootings, it is easy to understand why there would be a debate about whether or not college employees should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus, for the sake of their safety and security. However, as stated earlier, a school should be a trusted, safe, and conducive learning environment, and the fact that the allowance of concealed weapons for employees disrupts the very aim of the school system leads me to oppose the motion; ‘employees should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus.’ These are some reasons; First of all, It could also lead to disruption in the willingness to learn, as not all students would be willing to be physically present in their classes, knowing that some of their teachers may have gun hidden in their back pockets or even in their desk drawers. Allowing employees carry concealed weapons while on campus could eventually create a high level of distrust between the students and their teachers. Seeing as trust is considered a very important factor between teachers and their students’, this could in turn affect the students’ performance in school and interest in other extracurricular activities as a whole. Secondly, violence is never the solution. Allowing guns on campus will only help increase the tragedies and not avert them. The possession of concealed weapons could in time, grow to become a destructive mechanism instead of a protective one, whereas little arguments could lead to a shooting. It is illogical to fight violence with violence and not only would it lead to an increased crime, murder and death rate on the campus involved, it could also lead to endangerment of lives and unintended deaths as anyone could get hit by a stray bullet, whether or not they were the intended target. Cases of emotional instability such as depression and heartbreak could also act as a trigger, forcing one to do what he or she would not normally do if he or she was in the right state of mind. In such a case as this, the person involved could be a danger to himself/herself, and also a danger to those around him/her. Also, as an employee in an institution like a college, where stress, disputes and misunderstandings are unavoidable, the possession of guns could also lead to an increased rate in suicide. We should not disregard the fact that teachers are also human and they most likely have their own personal problems to deal with. Other means such as self-defense training, defense sprays, and tasers could be used as protective gear should one encounter an armed assailant.
