Michael Saul Dell is an American investor, philanthropist, author as well as a business magnate who was born on February 23, 1965 in Houston, Texas, U.S. His father was an orthodontist while the mother was stockbroker and a financial consultant. His parents had always wanted him to study medicine. However, he showed an early interest in business and technology. This can be seen from the fact that at the age of 15, he bought his Apple computer and due to curiosity, he disassembled it to see how it works. Dell Computer was the world’s largest PC maker.
The main ideas behind Michael Dell’s success are not very unique ideas. The first one is the having a common goal that everyone understands. The goal as seen from different books is that Michael had always had a strong passion for business and technology. He thus worked towards achieving his goal. He bought the Apple computer and disassembled it. From there, he managed to realize that by bringing the different components of a computer together, it could still work well. As a result, he came up with a plan whereby he bought different parts and then assembled and then sold the computers at a cheaper price. Middlemen have always been the biggest threat to business. Michael recognized the huge advantages he would make if he sold the computers directly to the end users. He thus used to make computers only when he had a customer. This resulted to the huge profits gained even after selling his machines at a lower price than the conventional computer stores. This is because he designed his machines for the buyers’ individual requirements.
Lastly, his urge to give back to the society is another thing that saw his fame rise. The benefits which accrued from the business were used to start the Dell Pediatric Health Research Institute which was located in Austin. This facility grew to be the nation’s leading centre dealing with children health as well as biomedical research. In conjunction with the wife, Susan, they also started the Michael and Susan Dell Centre for Advancement of Healthy Living. This institution addresses the environmental issues which affect children especially the childhood obesity and the Type 2 diabetes. He a...
