In the entire paperwork of “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allan Poe has strongly employed the use of irony and symbolism. It creates a short tale as a contestant worth of study. The clever use of symbols and ironies by the author creates horrifying and suspenseful tale. The use of irony as well as symbols in this artwork, have a great influence in the aftermath of Fortunato’s wellbeing. This tale relates an awful avenge made even when no real offenses have been committed. Montressor is a character who carries out revenge for egotism and family worth.
Irony denotes the expression of words or events differently from reality, contrary to the appearance or anticipation. The location where the story takes place, on the other hand, exhibits an ironic aspect. The characters meet in the period of Venice's Carnival. Carnival should be the time for celebration, enjoyment, and happiness; whereas we see revenge and deaths occur. An example of irony exhibits how the narrator treats his enemy. When these two characters meet, Montressor recognizes that Fortunato is tormented and distressed but Fortunato acts like he is okay. Montressor acts normal and friendly to Fortunato and compliments him for familiarity with the subjects of wines; secretly he is aware of his intentions of killing Fortunato.
