Why I Would Never Play Football
Sports and games are a means of mental and physical growth. Not only do they keep us healthy and fit, they also help in breaking the monotony of daily life. Sports and games help people to develop a sense of friendliness and team spirit. Some sports, however, are risky and have adverse long-term effects on the players. One sport I would never play is football. Football has well documented long-lasting effects on one’s brain, making it a risky, non-desirable sport.
Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States. The Super Bowl, an annual championship game, is the most watched sporting event in North America. Fascinating as it is to watch, football is a dangerous game to play. Football players suffer a myriad of physical injuries, including broken bones. Since football is a game of hitting hard, head injuries cannot be ruled out. Head injuries have long-lasting effects, and can result in a series of life-ending diseases.
A study commissioned by the National Football League (NFL) found that professional football players have a high risk of dying from neurodegenerative diseases. These conditions include Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Playing football increases the chances of sustaining mild traumatic head and brain injuries (Nordqvist). These injuries are known to spark neurodegenerative diseases along with concussions.
Repeated head injuries suffered when playing football can also result to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE refers to a form of brain injury that leads to long term personality changes, persistent headaches and depression. Other symptoms include memory loss, aggression and impulse control problems. The disease causes the progressive degeneration of one’s brain tissue years after they have suffered brain trauma (McKee AC, Stein TD, Nowinski CJ, et al 44). CTE is only diagnosable after death; hence the victims cannot be assisted.
