Othello, the Moor of Venice
In The Tragedy of Othello, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) presents the character Othello as a victim of the worst form of discrimination which is racism. In the play written around 1603 or 1604, the playwright presents the story of Othello, a dark-skinned, Moorish soldier from Africa who is married to a beautiful Venetian bride, Desdemona, but he “is cruelly tricked into believing that his wife is unfaithful”(Skiba et al., xvi) and he ends up killing her. Othello’s failure to appoint Iago as a lieutenant where he instead appoints a Florentine, Michael Cassio angers the self-entitled Iago who swears to ruin both Othello and Michael Cassio. As Iago embarks on his fiendish machinations to bring Othello and Cassio to ruin, he stokes intense racial hatred sentiments against the duo and through several incidences in the text Shakespeare effectively explores the theme of racial prejudice and discrimination in the Venetian society.
