Personal Identity
The essay will discuss the personal identity of various characters in the following film "Requiem for a dream, Half nelson and No country old men". I have chosen the various characters in the films to depict personal identity in the films and at the same time contrast the values. One will be able to see the disparity that exists and some contrast will be unveiled. The three films have different story lines, but the characters can depict the different themes in the films. I have chosen three of the best characters in each film to try comparing and contrasting their personal identity with respect to violence.
In the film Requiem for a dream, I will analyze and compare the main character to emulate their importance in the film. Harold Goldfarb is one of the characters that I will discuss in this film. He is a young man who depends on drug deals so that he can get the means to survival (Selby 100). Illegal drugs obsess him, and youthful disfigurement shows through his amputated hand. He is prescribed appetite suppressants because he rarely has appetite for food. In doing Harold, Goldfarb is another character who is a university graduate (Selby 110). He has more knowledge compared to the latter character, but he is very mischievous. He manages to drug his friends Marianne and Tyro ne so that they can escape reality. In a way, the characters want to escape reality of the world even though it is not possible. They use all the ways they think it is possible for them to engage in the fictitious world. Harold manages to become a drug dealer, which is a crucial role in determining the role he plays in the film. The shocking truth is that Harold becomes a major consumer of heroin, and he later discovers that the universe of drug dealers is ruthless and violent. Later in the film, the arm is amputated revealing the power of drug after becoming a major consumer.
Harold is seen as a tender person through the recurrent of memories when he was a child. He relates well with other characters since they have the same characteristics as portrayed by the film. He love fantasy and use heroin to visit their fictitious world where they can relax away from their real problems (Selby 120). Unlike Harold, Sheriff Ed loved his friends, and that is why he keeps remembering memories of his friends during World War II. Harold and Dan are similar in that they both want to live in their world and not give recognition to the existing one.
In the film No Country for Old Men, I will discuss the main character namely Sheriff Ed Tom Bell. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell is the main protagonist in the film and has the responsibility of the town (McCarthy 123). He is seen as a laconic veteran from the World War II, and he has a duty to protect the citizen from crime by the outlaws. He is struggling on solving the crimes in the town but faces enormity as he continues to solve. The sheriff left his men to die in World War II, and this memory continue to haunt him and this is why he tries to protect Moss using law enforcement.
Frank is the opposite of the sheriff since he is the main antagonist in the film. Unlike Sheriff Ed, he is an abuse and kills people so that he can be paid. Sheriff Ed tries to protect the welfare of Moss showing the extent of his humanity.
