Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia (also known as pre-eclampsia) is a condition that affects women during their third trimester (from around 20 weeks) or after they after delivered their baby. A patient experiences a sudden rise in her blood pressure and signs that show damage in the body’s organ system. For instance, a patient is likely to experience a condition known as albuminuria and facial swellings. This paper examines its symptoms, diagnosis and the new treatments offered.
Symptoms
Preeclampsia is a common condition that affects many pregnancies. Mostly, the condition has two major symptoms. First, expectant mothers are likely to face a condition known as Proteinuria, In other words, they will experience the leaking of excess protein in the urine. However, most mothers are not able to detect this problem unless they consult medical advice. Second, patients also experience facial swellings and high blood pressure (hypertension). However, hypertension is common in pregnant women, and any case of it does not mean they are suffering from Preeclampsia (Turner 329).
Diagnosis
In most cases, the doctor uses the two symptoms mentioned above (Hypertension and Proteinuria to diagnose this condition. The two must show positive results. For instance, any abnormal blood pressure during pregnancy is taken seriously. Second, the surest Diagnosis way is taking the urine samples of the expectant mother (Turner 327). If they contain abnormal amounts of proteins, then the mother is likely suffering from Preeclampsia. Moreover, the doctor can carry out blood tests to see whether the kidneys and the liver are functioning well.
