Introduction
All of us would ideally like to spend our lives cherished around a healthy, loving and a strong relationship. On the contrast, the statistics surrounding relationships paint a completely opposite picture, at least in the United States. Break ups in relationship have become a common occurrence and going from one relationship into other is almost taken for granted these days. Close of half of all the first marriages in US ends up breaking apart. The success rate for the second marriages is not great either. Importantly, such a grim statistics reflects the picture of a marriage and a relationship literally as a game of chance where the difference in the odds of it being successful and unsuccessful is hardly any. However, there are important underlying factors in a successful relationship. Hence, studying these provides an insight and an understanding into what really makes a relationship not work and fall apart (Greenberg).
Reasons for Relationship Failure
Trust is one of the most important underlying consideration for sustaining the growth of relationship and adds to safety and security of it. Inevitably, some instances of doubts are bound to creep in any relationship at any point of time. Dramatically, researchers have concluded that in case of mistrust expressed by any one of the individuals in the relationship the quality of response from the other individual matters greatly and determines the shape and form it will take going forward (Atkinson). The way people respond to doubts, confusions, grievances often determine which direction the relationship is likely to head to. Sociologists, who have been analysing relationship closely for a long time, tend to point that commitment to a relationship might necessarily that both the partners think that the other will support the personal interests of the other. Sociologists increasingly point out that concerns of individuals in a relationship to their goal should not matter as much as relationship oriented commitments and relationship goals. In other words, relationship goals that individual goals. This effect has been termed as "Manhattan effect" and often poses serious threat for a harmonious relationship. Hence, it is absolutely necessary for partners in a relationship to determine the relationship expectations and carefully calibrate on "what we want" rather than "what I want" so that, going forward, changes in partner's expectations do not pose threats to the relationship's sanctity.
Another common factor that has emerged from the new technological age is the dynamics of the work culture. Professional lives have become more heterogeneous involving both males and females. Hence, it is but natural that both males and females seek rapid progress and growth in their individual professional lives. Relational divergence in situations where partners are working professional individuals can emanate from one partner growing at a rapid strides in his/her respective profession while the other is not able to. Growth in professions might mean lack of time, commitment and also means that the social and professional stature and circle of the individual might change depending on the growth. Inevitably, such a situation will lead to divergence of personal interest and will force the individual to belittle commitments and might lead to self-centred arguments and debates which might lead to clashes too. Importantly, this is one of the common features for the breaking of the relationships in the modern times (Preston).
One of the most prominent reasons for the breaking apart of the relationship is the lack of communication between partners. Allegedly, this is one of the...
