Should college faculty and students be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus?
The last few years, U.S has witnessed increased mass shootings in schools. This has fuelled an already controversial and prolonged debate on whether or not to allow concealed guns in colleges. The faction in support of guns in campus feels that it will make colleges safer. Those against it, feel that it is a recipe for disaster as colleges are bound to witness uncontrolled level of gun possession. Should the college fraternity be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus?
Concealed weapons should be allowed on campus to enhance safety of the college community. Carrying concealed weapons could help prevent violent attacks such as mass shooting because attackers are aware that they can be confronted by armed criminals in the campus environment. It will not just reduce mass shootings, but also other forms of crime such as rape and aggravated assault (Mangan 1). According to Mangan, recent shootings point to a trend that criminals tend to attack gun-free environments such as colleges (1). Having armed students and faculty could be deterrence to attackers since victims can defend themselves.
