Social Inequality
Social inequality can be termed as the presence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different statuses and social functions within a society or a group. This act of inequality can be attributed to several important dimensions that involve incomes, earnings from investments and employment opportunities. In addition, social inequality is included in dimensions such as power and occupations (Bills 74).
Sexuality can be attributed to the body parts which includes one's gender identity. In this sense, it defines one as male or female or both. In addition, it seeks to explain the idea of how a person of a particular gender ought to behave. Most importantly, sexuality includes a feeling on how one feel about their bodies and this in turn affects one's ability in many situations (Bruess 6).
Despite the attempt to socially progress and increase the participation of women in the labor market and increase the number of girls who access the education, there still exist social inequalities between men and women of which all are mostly attributed to sexuality. In matters of employment and salary scales, the inequalities of men and women are evident. This has further been attributed to the possibility of primary persistence of the established duties and responsibilities of men and women within a society which mostly lies within the family unit.
Regarding sexuality, the females have been believed to depend on men especially when they are married. They expect men to provide everything for them. In this regards, it has resulted to gender pay gap in which a male and a female working on the same job with the same experience and working for the same time will see a female earn less than a female fellow. This depicts that discrimination exists due to one's gender (Rahman, Stevi 92).
Generally, due to sexuality, women have been placed unequally in society to different levels of the social organization. Starting from the macro-level societal economy and trough, the societal institutions of the society women are placed differently and differently rewarded. This implies that there if the difference in the ways society ranks male and females. More often, when both genders are ranked, male are mostly seen as the superior beings.
Theories that have attempted to justify the existence of these social inequalities as contributed by sexuality include the materialist theory. This theory uses cultural data of both genders in society. It explains that gender equality is as a result of how men and women are tied to the economic structures that are existing in societies. These theories mainly emphasize on control and distribution of the valued resources within the society. This theory points out that woman is known for the roles of house and becoming mothers and wife. Even though this is very important to the society, the women are devalued and denied the most highly valued public resources (Bills 76).
This theory further points out that woman is mostly directed to the works of the family while the men are directed towards trade and market place. When these women try to enter into labor markets, they are concentrated on low paying jobs. Moreover, these women enter these labor markets and leave more often than men due to issues such as child care and other household responsibilities which are expected of them to handle. Historically, women had lower education levels as compared to men that are till now still perceived as still uneducated thus continuous inequality being witnesses.
Traditionally, there was a division of chores based on domestic and public spheres. This was more constraining to women than men. This sphere was related to activities such as the property ownership, power, and prestige. Men were allocated all the powerful posts while women were seen as reproductive beings and thus their activities were to lie in domestic. Men in these instances were freed from these instances, and their obligations were viewed as economic since they valued resources. They had the power to control the valuable resources. To this date, some people still believe in this and treat women as such.
Most importantly, it is worth noting that gender roles are not uniform globally. Each society has distinctive roles and certain expectations of each gender. This approach aims at learning and understanding the behaviors of masculine and feminine. These approaches emphasize on characteristics of the individuals in the course of socialization. This might include dependent and independence behaviors in ways the male and female genders relate to each other (Rahman, Stevi 97).
Economic disparity is the difference in economic distribution that includes income, pay, and wealth. This difference in economic positions relates to characteristics such gender, disability or ethnic backgrounds. Despite the fact that equality trust recognizes the significance of the difference in economic statuses, there is a need to work on these differences so that none can over depend on another.
This economic equality can be income inequality that depicts the extent to which income is distributed in a group of people in society. In addition, pay inequality that shows how income is distributed in society. The inequality emanating from this describes the difference between the peoples salary. Furthermore, Wealth inequality refers to the difference in people’s wealth such as the assets and private pension rights. It, therefore, seeks to describe the difference of within a group of people in society.
The difference in economic independence between men and female have been linked mostly that women suffer if they aren’t independent. According to (Steward 474), violence against women is mostly linked to economical dependency on the spouse with the well established economical background. Others factors that have been linked to women abuse involve sexual inequality, using violence for conflict resolution, male authority linked to making most decisions at home and divorce restrictions imposed on these women.
The International human rights (Stewart 476) continued to show that economic dependence has been found to be a major source of women disempowerment. By preventing women to challenge this violence, women are made more susceptible t o it. The restrictions of divorce force women to remain in violent marriages and relationships. In addition, patterns of socialization which again disempowered women involve alcoholism, and the male perceives to control women.
It is logical that, violence cannot be treated simply as a symptom of the other underlying factors since violence begets violence. Violence in itself is a cause to the disempowerment of women due to continuous dependence on a male, fear and inequality. It is worth noting that, violence is so pervasive and deeply entrenched in the structures of most societies and thus can be easily viewed by both perpetrators as a normal way of life and thus an inevitable act. In a poverty zone, violence is likely to be a normal way of daily life. Thus, with continuous economical inequality thriving between men and women, violence will continue especially for women.
The witnessed violence will continue to be seen as long as the disparity of economic status of men and women continues. Women relying mostly on men s income are more vulnerable to abuse since they fell that they are secure there and thus will stay in such a violent home and hoping one-day things will change for better. With this disparity also, women are being viewed as not important members of families. You may find a home a father takes seriously the education of the boy child and ensures that they get well educated leaving the girl child. This is it also is economic disempowerment. The girl child will be subjected to being dependent on someone’s funds to survive making her vulnerable to abuses and violence (Stewart 479).
It has also been found that the social disparity between genders intersects with violence in women in some ways. Women with less financial resources as compared to men are usually faced with significant barriers in their trial to getting their selves a safe accommodation if they leave their violent homes. This violence and teaming up against women has become the leading cause of women and children’s being homelessness since nobody is willing to support them.
Logically, a woman who faces domestic violence has been found to have disruptions of their capacity and capability to work. This has been evidenced since it limits the workforce who further limits their resources and become less independent. These facts force them to remain in their abusive relationships. This also leads them to fail not to get the resources and support needed from outside.
Resources have also been linked to education and women. Levels of education being different between male and females who had experienced any form of violence have been found to have impacts. Women’s who are being abused seems to have lost hopes in their lives and stays only in those kinds of relationships so that they can get support. Victimization has shown that women who are working and have a better living are less victimized and thus are stable in their marriages. On the other hand, women who aren’t independent are very vulnerable to victimization.
The associations also between class indicators and violence against women have shown that the connections are more complex. For instance, review studies depict that, weak, moderate associations that exist between men perpetration of their intimate partners and their education levels have impacts. In addition, labor force participations and income have varying intensity in showing the violence impacted on women.
