A Summary of Dave Tomar’s “The Shadow Scholar”
The story revolves around New Jersey, America during the George W. Bush administration. In chapter one, we are introduced to David Tomar, a Rutgers University student who is an aspiring writer. His main tool of trade is a laptop which he terms a ‘bionic organ’. With copious amounts of assignments, he rarely gets time for himself as he struggles to hit the deadlines. He does not regret helping students cheat as he blames the flaws in the American education system and the system as a whole.
We soon learn that he got into this trade out of the hard times he goes through in the college. He was so broken that he could not even afford notebooks. He loses his car, about which he informs his classmate Erin. Erin offers to lend him ninety dollars on one condition that, he has to write her a sociology paper. Seeing a business opportunity, he agrees and afterwards, she is pleased with his work and starts recommending him to other comrades. He starts paying less attention to his studies.
His teenage friend Bree introduces him to rich kid Sid. Sid comes from a rich background and does not care for anything in the world. He represents Generation Y, a new brood of millennials who believe in cheating their way to the top.
