Cultural Clash in Asian American Literature
Asian American communities in America consist of various groups such as Chinese, Korean Vietnamese, Filipino, and Asian Indian. The groups have different cultures, languages, beliefs, which crisscross with the other civilizations under challenging ways. Such clash in culture is portrayed distinctly in Asian American literature pegging the way the characters interact within themselves and their environments. The focus of this essay is on two Asian American writings, The Woman Warrior authored by Maxine Hong Kingston and Blu's Hanging, a text written by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. The Woman Warrior is categorized as an autobiography, while Blu's Hanging is considered as a domestic fiction work. The narrators in the two books show their interactive relationship with family and friends, hence, making them the critical aspects of the books. The outcome of their relationships with the society around them is pivotal in establishing how culture clashes between various racial groups. Exploring culture clash in the two Asian American literature will reveal knowledge about underlying themes such as career change and identity. Blu's Hanging and The Woman Warrior, have similarities in several aspects. They both address the challenges families experience in handling the influence of two different cultures, Asian as well as American. The settings of both books are within the U.S.A, but The Woman Warrior contains some sections referring to events back in Asia. The background of the two editions is about some critical occurrences in the 20th-century Asian-American account. The Woman Warrior is centered on the Gold Rush period, and years after that resulted in the relocation of families to the U.S.A where they faced culture shock. Blu's Hanging talks about a Japanese immigrant family based in Hawaii that has to deal with the cultural differences within the area. The common theme is a culture clash that is experienced through career and identity.
