Cultural Clash in Asian American Literature
Asian American communities in America consist of various groups such as Chinese, Korean Vietnamese, Filipino, and Asian Indian. Such clash in culture is portrayed distinctly in Asian American literature pegging the way the characters interact within themselves and their environments. The focus of this essay is on two Asian American writings, The Woman Warrior authored by Maxine Hong Kingston and Blu's Hanging, a text written by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. The Woman Warrior is categorized as an autobiography, while Blu's Hanging is considered as a domestic fiction work. The narrators in the two books show their interactive relationship with family and friends, hence, making them the critical aspects of the books. The outcome of their relationships with the society around them is pivotal in establishing how culture clashes between various racial groups. The Woman Warrior is centered on the Gold Rush period, and years after that resulted in the relocation of families to the U.S.A where they faced culture shock. Blu's Hanging talks about a Japanese immigrant family based in Hawaii that has to deal with the cultural differences within the area. The common theme is a culture clash that is experienced through career and identity.
