Vance writes from his outline to Hillbilly Elegy, he wants individuals to comprehend what occurs in the existence of the underprivileged and the mental influence that material and spiritual poverty creates on their children and states that the individuals of Appalachia with whom he knows poverty has been a family custom (Vance & Elegy, p.2). Certainly, poverty has a nationwide endemic; however, why Vance believe the rotations of family poverty is constant for the Appalachian people as well as the cities near. For that reason, this review will trace the idea of the American Dream through Vance’s book. Further, the essay will show how the above ideas fit with the people in Hillbilly Elegy and determines success or failure as well as who is responsible and ultimately who pays the price for failure to attain the Dream. Finally, highlight if the American Dream attainable.
Origin of the American dream
Vance thinks that the cyclic of family poverty remains constant in Appalachian cities and region that are around since there are more obstacles that delay their economic achievement. Family poverty is constant in this area due to the social inaccessibility that the area is facing. Vance offers the case of the place of worship engaging to the feelings of the individuals instead of offering social aid to the individuals. Additionally, the American dream remains an intangible for the populations of Jackson and Middletown based on the demographic nature and history of America.
