The American Dream
It is essential to point out that the overall American Dream was a belief that an individual can become successful in society despite his or her race, gender, class, and nationality. Therefore, Fitzgerald used various characters such as Wilson to critically showcase the theme of the American dream in society, particularly the USA. In his analysis, Fitzgerald presents an excellent overview of the American society that shuns societal challenges like tax evasion, racism, xenophobia, and misogyny. However, the elusive achievements that the American Dream presents are a true reflection of the harsh life experience that various characters encountered in the Great Gatsby.
The American Dream Presents a sense of material possession, which to some extent is likely to create pride in a societal setting (Chang and Li). Although people often work to gain things like money and power, such things are not considered enough in settling real human needs such as happiness as well as love (Chang and Li). Consequently, Fitzgerald highlights various characters that were willing to give up their moral beliefs in attaining power and money, therefore, leading to emptiness in their hearts. The author presented the American dream as promising, although it does portray what people expected.
