The Barn Burning and the Yellow Wallpaper: A Literally Analysis
The Barn Burning is a short story authored by the American William Faulkner. In a nutshell, the story deals with conflicts of class both internal and external, vengeance and love through the influence of fathers and mothers respectfully. The artistic skill of the author is recognized as anger and vengeance are narrated through the eyes of a young, impressionable child as a third person (Loges, 90). The yellow paper is a featured short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman who is one of the earliest feminist literatures from America. The featured story can also be used to illustrate the attitudes present in 19th century regarding women’s mental and physical health. The narrative skill of the author is acknowledged as she presents the story in first person. As the story is being narrated, readers are able to notice the author building tempo while having a supreme mastery of language & attitudes over expression (Gilman, 13).
The Barn Burning and the Yellow Wallpaper: Similarities
In both stories, there are instances of mental cases where narrators suffer from mental anguish within their families. For instance, the story Barn Burning introduces silent tyrants. Such silent tyrants include the father to a son. The father, unfortunately, believes that being a tyrant father to his children is appropriate hence physically abuses and beats his son claiming that is how a man acts (Loges, 87). The author William Faulkner builds up the tempo in the story as he introduces the major part of the story by Sartoris Snopes receiving huge blow to the side of the head from the father. The author also introduces a voice of reason within the Snope’s family by the name of Lennie Snopes. She is the mother to the protagonist son being abused by her husband. She believes in morality and heavily opposes her husband’s bestiality towards her son.
Present as well in the story Yellow Wallpaper is a narrative description of a mental case. The author Charlotte uses overt and covert ways to bring suspense to the narrative despite it being a melancholy narration. The author introduces a woman who is seemingly locked up by her husband to recover when she falls ill (Gilman, 54). The protagonist lady keeps a journal to herself and documents her supposed hallucinations. The artistic nature of the author is noted here as she brings out the psychological issue. The mental disorder surface as the protagonist begins to hallucinate. The antagonistic husband realizes there is a problem with his wife through her eerie utterances. “There is something strange in the house.” “I see a wall filled with sprawling flamboyant patterns yellow in color.” The author Charlotte describes the husband as the voice of reason after desperate attempts to tell his wife she imagines the Yellow Wallpaper. He regularly attends to his wife relevant to helping her back to reality (Gilman, 54).
The Barn Burning and the Yellow Wallpaper: Differences
The author William Faulkner in his story introduces characters that seem to be appealed by violence, war and anger. The author introduces the Snopes family who seems to be addicts of violence against their children. One of the antagonistic characters by the name of Abner Snopes is described as a penchant individual who focused on revenge and destruction. Violence is also incepted in the story when the father wishes to burn a barn only because of a selfish ego. The author on the other introduces the son as wise as he forbids him to burn the barn despite the violent beatings he received from the father (Comprone, 104).
The story Yellow Wallpaper sees the author Charlotte introduces a different theme of hallucinations, ghosts, dramatic imaginations and eerie behaviors. The author’s art of manipulating language to her advantage
