The Colour Purple was written by Alice Walker in 1982. The book is set in the deep American South when segregation was heavily practiced. The book’s main narrator is Cecile, a young black girl who writes her letters to God. Cecile has her children taken away from her, is forced into an abusive marriage and as a result she is separated from her beloved sister Nettle. However, Cecile meets Shug Avery and Sofia –strong women who stand up for their rights and know their self-worth. As a result, Cecile gradually realises that there is more to life and she starts a journey of self- discovery. This paper will highlight ten quotes from the book and expound on the same.
