The Colour Purple
The Colour Purple was written by Alice Walker in 1982. The book is set in the deep American South when segregation was heavily practiced. The book’s main narrator is Cecile, a young black girl who writes her letters to God. Cecile has her children taken away from her, is forced into an abusive marriage and as a result she is separated from her beloved sister Nettle. However, Cecile meets Shug Avery and Sofia –strong women who stand up for their rights and know their self-worth. As a result, Cecile gradually realises that there is more to life and she starts a journey of self- discovery. This paper will highlight ten quotes from the book and expound on the same.
“He (Pa) never had a kine word to say to me. Just say You gonna do what your mammy wouldn’t. First he put his thing up against my hip and sort of wiggle it around. Then he grab hold my titties. Then he push his thing inside my pussy. When that hurt, I cry. He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it” (White 8).
