The issue of a minimum wage has attracted conflicting debates in contemporary America. The legislation provides the required standards upon which laborers should sell their services. The minimum wage was established to stimulate economic growth, creating a better living standard for lower-class citizens. However, in the contemporary USA, there exist opposing viewpoints on the matter. On the one hand, the proponents hold that the minimum wage is necessary because it can protect workers from exploitation. On the other hand, the opponents argue that the standards can disadvantage companies, especially in developing organizations. Essentially, the minimum wage should not be abolished because the law protects employees from exploitation in the workplace, hence mitigating poverty and improving people’s standard of living, and enhancing societal equality.
The minimum wage should not be abolished since it can tackle poverty and improve people’s living standards. Since unscrupulous employers can exploit vulnerable groups, such as the minorities and the unskilled, the Federal and state governments are justified to set the bar upon which all organizations should follow when compensating workers. As a result, the standardized wage can aid in reducing poverty in communities as well as enhance the well-being of all members of society. Notably, a standardized salary can enhance communal welfare since every worker will meet his or her personal needs. Through this strategy, it is assumed that people’s happiness and wellbeing can be guaranteed.
In addition, the minimum wage should not be abolished because it plays a vital role in enhancing equality in society. Since the legislation demands that all people be paid a minimum amount of money, economic discrimination based on age, gender, and the color is curtailed. Besides, the minimum wage is fundamental because it mitigates cases of exploitation in the American community. It is factual to note that instances of employee exploitation can be widespread without prior regulation, especially in capitalist societies.
