Tragedy in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play that portrays the tragedy of Macbeth. At the beginning of the play, three witches, the Weird Sisters, appear to Macbeth and prophesied that he will become the thane of Cawdor. The witches also told him that he will sit on the throne and that Banquo’s heirs will cause his downfall. The prophecy from the three witches significantly contributed to the change of Macbeth’s character. For instance, he felt as if it was the time for him to take things into his hands to ensure that he met his destiny. Additionally, it did not matter to him whether what he was doing was moral or immoral, evil or right, or good or bad. Macbeth’s greed for power after the three witches prophesied he will become the king made him a heartless and evil person, which is the reason why I cannot relate to that character.

Macbeth’s issues emanate from his greed for power, which makes him end up engaging in evil activities. In Act 1, Scene 2, the Captain says, “Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements (Shakespeare 1.2. 18-26).” At this point, the Captain is referring to the murder conducted by Macbeth. Since Banquo and Macbeth were generals who served King Duncan of Scotland, they were supposed to be loyal. However, the three witches prophesy made Macbeth change and become a murderer whose only goal was to become the king of Scotland. Although I have ambitions in my career and life, I cannot kill someone to achieve them. I always believe in working hard to get what I want in life.
