Transgender Athletes
Transgender athlete’s inclusion in the Olympic Games is a debate as sex is a determinant in the performance of an individual. Sex impacts body fat, weight, height, anaerobic and aerobic capacity and muscle mass. Transgender athletes should not be allowed to take part in the Olympic Games in the standard gender classification. Allowing them to compete with the standard gender classification as a way of inclusion will increase their chances of winning the games. Transgender women have an advantage of competing in the Olympics because of their strengths in hormones. It is a threat in the Olympics as the eligibility of transgender women is high, and they have high levels of testosterone which makes them remain strong despite taking the hormone therapies, thus creating unfairness (Hilton & Lundberg, 203). Transgender women-run twelve per cent faster than cisgender women hence outperforming them in the Olympics. Besides, testosterone suppressants reduce the minimal muscular advantage of transgender women athletes; thus, fairness is not ensured in most Olympic Games.
The levels of endurance, body mass, and explosiveness in transgender athletes are high compared to the standard gender classification. Transgender athletes have an advantage of high levels of haemoglobin which follows the levels of testosterone. Haemoglobin is an important factor that boosts endurance in the Olympic Games; thus, transgender women athletes have an advantage as their haemoglobin level is high. Trans men have an advantage over cisgender men as the masculinizing hormones given to them for one year makes them stronger hence dominating the games (Handelsman, Hirschberg & Bermon, 810).
Transgender athletes should be allowed to participate in the Olympics because it is their right. They deserve the chance to showcase their talents and skills to the world. The newly formulated rules and regulations regarding transgender should be enforced to allow transgender participate in the Olympics. Transgender has always been sexually and psychologically violated over the years; thus, allowing them to participate in the Olympics would change that history (Genel, 12). Transgender athletes were subjected to gender verification which involved visual examination of their bodies. Female athletes were made to undergo chromosome testing in the past to verify their gender. The methods used to verify transgender athletes subjected them to shame for showcasing their nude bodies to individuals in charge of the gender verification process.
Besides, sex reassignment surgery, including gonadectomy and external genitalia changes released by the IOC in 2003, subjected female athletes to sexual violations (Vilain et al., 159). Transgender athletes are perceived as a threat to sports due to their ability which should not be a civilized society. Also, no research proves that transgender athletes threaten the policies to regulate sporting activities in the Olympics.
