Reading and Response
The main idea in the reading is the architectural context. Architectural work never exists alone; it forms a bond with a particular context, which can be physical, environmental, infrastructural, or ephemeral context. Work gives meaning to context and can further reveal previously unknown context. Physical “givens” can be a motivational source for the concept of a particular architectural work. A building’s relationship to its site can be established through natural or artificial topography. The reading further emphasizes that physical aspects such as material, scale, space, and location establish a context for work(49). Material context is expansive since a house can be built using different materials such as wood, stone, or bricks. A context holds two aspects of scale, the scale of the site and the scale of perception. There are natural physical attributes in every area allocated for building work.
Furthermore, a construction can exist within a network of public space or internal and private spatial networks. Various infrastructural contexts can either be physical traces or formalized transportation and service infrastructure. Infrastructural givens have elaborate layers and networks within them, some of which can be tampered with, or others can cause potential disasters. The idea of Ephemeral context entails invincible context such as narratives whereby an architecture can illustrate a story. Furthermore, cultural traditions inscribed within a context can produce spaces within which cultural practices are performed. Also, various historical contexts that reveal what might have occurred in a particular site. Environmental givens such as weather and extreme variability can either affect the construction positively by providing warmth or negatively through the building's collapse (55).
