Breaking the Cycle: Ableism and the Phenomenon of Lowered Expectations
For centuries, individuals with disabilities have faced societal barriers and have faced stigmatization. Cheri Blauwet, a highlights how she conquered the challenges through resilience. The title of her talk was “Breaking the Cycle: Ableism and the phenomenon of lowered expectations”. She gave the talk in 2022 in a TEDx event. Lowering our expectations on people with disabilities makes us not realize their full potential.
Cheri highlights how her life changed when she had an accident in her early years which took away her ability to ever walk again. Cheri also points out on the discrimination that she faced in middle school. However she decided to break the cycle when she decided to get into a wheelchair racing. This pivotal decision led her to win a gold medal in a championship in 2004. She got into Stanford Medical School where she decided that she will become an agent of change to help others like her. She serves in the board of directors of Paralympic athletes. Moreover, She is a Proffessor in Harvard and also a doctor . However being a doctor came with its own challenges as she has also faced discrimination in the health sector.
The talk is intended for the individuals with disabilities and the general public. It is aimed at showing the disabled that they can accomplish anything they want. It is also intended to inform the general public to empower the disabled to achieve their full potential.
Overally, I think the talk is inspiring. The talk made has given me a new outlook on people with disabilities. Cheryl never let disability hold her back. She was determined to achieve her dreams...
